2025 Quilt Judge Training Endorsements

Jenny Lyon

"Locals and beyond, this is a rare opportunity for in person Quilt Judge training. I took this course and learned a LOT, gained confidence and feel better prepared to judge quilts. These [quilt] judge teachers will not be offering this class again for a few years. Now is the time: Vacaville, CA, Feb 24 - 25, 2026."

Jan Courtney Millner

Quilter and Quilting Judge

"A welcoming atmosphere led by seasoned, engaged quilt judges invites the would-be quilt judge into an interactive, tactile experience of quilt judging basics and beyond. The relaxed, professional atmosphere of the 2-day course allows the quilt judging student to meet others who are learning about quilt judging and to feel accomplished at the end of class. All of which benefit a quilter's education, resume, and quilt-making techniques. I highly recommend this quilt judging program!"

Julia McLeod

"A well-planned course introducing all the key concepts of how to judge a quilt and what to expect if you're called upon to be a judge. I particularly appreciated the emphasis on offering encouraging comments to improve technique and promote creative growth. Disband the Quilt Police!"

Roberta Burke

Newsletter Editor of the Northern California Quilt Council

"I learned to celebrate every quilt shown, because caring intent and diligent crafting, make them all beautiful."

Caroline Poage

"This judging class encourages POSITIVE comments to address avenues by which the quilter might choose to improve his/her quilting skills; and causes the attendees to become more realistic about their interests and abilities regarding a judging experience."

Shelley Wardrop

"I highly recommend this class to anyone interested in judging quilts. Not only did the course provide insight into my own quilting skills, but it continues to help me help others to enhance and hone their quilting skills."

Kathy Donaldson

"Earlier this year I participated in two fully packed days learning the key elements of judging quilts. The training was beautifully taught by talented and kind women with a mission to encourage quilters in their creative mission.

The teachers introduced the concept that judging quilts is an evolving process. There is a shift from judges being the “quilt police” to those who promote the art of quilting by giving an evaluation that is kind, gentle, constructive and valuable to the quilt maker. Every aspect of the training emphasized this idea.

All elements of judging a quilt is included in the training. Judging should include an evaluation of the quilt’s artistry. Components of the quilt’s artistry are visual impact and design elements – that thing that brings the quilt to life, delivers a message and evokes an emotion.

Technical elements are considered including pattern, appearance, construction, primary and secondary technique, general appearance and finishing. Many opportunities are provided for practice judging in small groups.

If you are interested in this process and wish to help others advance their practice, consider this training."
